“When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself.” -Liberty Hyde Bailey
A couple of weeks ago, I flew to Hong Kong (by myself- thus the quote) from Pearson. Now, my flight was at 10AM, and since it was an international flight, that meant that I needed to be at the airport 3 hours prior to my flight. Checking in my baggage and going through security literally took 40 minutes, so I had another 2 hours to kill before my flight.
So, to kill time, I wandered around Pearson for a bit, window shopping at the duty free stores until I settled down at a restaurant at one of the gates (as picture above). I sat down, opened my laptop and went on Pinterest for a bit- and then almost immediately fell asleep. I guess my lack of sleep finally caught up with me and I went off to find coffee. I stumbled across a Starbucks (don’t judge me but I wanted the stars, I’m obsessed) and splurged on an iced caramel macchiato. It cost me like $5 but it was so worth it.
When I sat back down with my coffee, I opened up my laptop and but instead of going online, I began to people watch. I probably looked like a total creep, staring at people as they walked along, but for some reason I felt really peaceful. There’s just something about airports that fascinate me, people walking along; minding their own business; doing their own thing. Everyone’s caught up in their own bubble- the business people talking on their phones, the couple holding hands, the parents and their children- they’re all caught up in their own worlds.
As I sat there, sipping on my coffee and people watching, I had some time to think (and when I say think, I mean really reflect). I won’t say what I thought about because then this post is gonna get real deep real quick (0-100 quick) but it kinda changed my perspective. I realized that everyone in life has different opportunities, and sometimes it’s not about how hard you work; or how determined you are, it’s simply about who you know and your timing.
The above quote totally applied to my situation. When I was sitting there alone, I had time to think about my own life and my own values. This is gonna sound very cheesy, but I guess I had time to get acquainted with myself. I think that if you have the opportunity to travel alone, you should do it. You not only experience things in a whole new way, but you also get to spend some time with your thoughts.
With that being said, it’s time for you to go on your own adventure- go explore!
