“I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” -Mary Anne Radmache
While travelling, I can sometimes get a little homesick and so I like to pop into a Starbucks every now and then to feel more at home. Every time I go into a Starbucks in a different country, I get to see a snapshot into the lives of the native peoples. People watching in a coffee shop has got to be one of the most relaxing things (at least for me) and when I sit there sipping my coffee and just looking around, I feel like I belong there and it makes me miss home a little less.
I’m currently in China, and people don’t usually drink coffee here. But, there are always people in Starbucks and I think it’s because when they sit in a coffee shop (either alone or with friends), there’s a sense of peace and quiet in an otherwise busy country.
Yesterday, I popped into a Starbucks during lunch and sat by a window and I just enjoyed it. I feel like by just sitting there alone, it’s changed my perspective on technology (as cliche as that sounds), I realized that sometimes I need to put down my phone and look up. When I stopped looking at my phone and just looked around and enjoyed drinking my coffee, there was a sense of catharsis that came over me. I realized that I was in a foreign country drinking coffee- an opportunity that few have.
As I was looking around, I realized that a lot of people never actually get to travel (or leave their own country) and looking back at my life so far, I became aware of the fact that I am so privileged to have been to so many different countries- and so many different places- and just explore.
I don’t know if I made a lot of sense in this post, but there was something about just sitting in a coffee shop alone that made me realize two things: one, it’s good to be alone sometimes with your thoughts (as scary as that sounds) and two, I’ve learned to appreciate the fact that I’ve had to the opportunity to travel to so many amazing places.
So go relax with your own cup of coffee and I’ll talk to you guys soon.
