Todays prompt is about what I do when I’m not writing. Ideally, I would be spending my days being productive- either working or studying and writing would be my way of relaxing and reflecting on my day.
However, since I’m currently unemployed and on summer vacation, writing has become my way of staying productive. I don’t want my brain to turn to mush over the summer so writing just seems like a great way to stimulate myself. At this time, when I’m not writing I like to go for runs or do yoga. I also really enjoy being outside, whether it’s in a coffee shop just reading and people watching or hanging out with friends. I think that both reading and gaining experience are great ways to improve my writing. It helps to keep me centred and when I come back to, it gives me something to write about. Reading is great because it let’s me see how great writers articulate themselves and how their stories flow. I’ve noticed that with my writing: 1) it doesn’t really flow as well so it sounds choppy and repetitive, and 2) I don’t really incorporate any complex words. I really would like to be able to express myself using more complex words (using words like cantankerous or demiurge) so when I’m writing for school, I sound a bit more refined.
Anyways, other things I enjoy when I’m not writing include binge watching TV shows (and when I say binge watching, I mean 3 seasons in a day- go big or go home right?), and travelling. Here are a couple of pictures from Toronto’s distillery district that I took a while back- it’s fun to go and explore, and it really allows me to clear my head and gain new experiences that I can draw from when I write.
Also, I’m currently trying to learn Italian- if you remember my posts from last summer, you’ll recall that I started learning but since I was in school for the fall/winter that kind of got put on hold. I’m using Duolingo and I think it’s going pretty well. The other day in the coffee shop I overheard a conversation in Italian and I could make out a few words (one of them being ‘chicken’) but I was nevertheless very proud of myself.
So thats it for today! Stay tuned for more of my ramblings tomorrow.
